The Dynamic Duo: How Compression and Boost Work Together
Understanding how a compressor boost pedal setup interacts is key to unlocking professional guitar tones. A compressor works by narrowing the dynamic range of your signal—quieting down the loudest peaks and boosting the quietest notes. This creates a highly consistent, balanced output and acts as a natural sustain pedal without adding unwanted distortion.
A clean boost, on the other hand, takes that balanced signal and increases its overall amplitude. When placed after a compressor, a boost allows you to push the front end of your valve amplifier into natural saturation or simply raise your volume for a solo without altering your core tone. Together, they form the foundation of a professional signal chain, enhancing touch sensitivity and note definition.

Choosing Your Style: Optical, VCA, and Boost Types
To help you find the perfect match for your playing style, here is a breakdown of the primary technologies available in our collection:
Optical Compressors
Known for their smooth, musical, and organic response. An optical compressor uses a light-dependent photocell circuit to control gain reduction. This creates a slower, more natural attack and release curve, making it highly favored by acoustic players and clean-tone purists.
VCA & OTA Compressors
Fast, precise, and punchy. Voltage-Controlled Amplifier (VCA) and Operational Transconductance Amplifier (OTA) circuits offer lightning-fast attack times and precise control. They are the ultimate choice for funk scratching, country chicken-picking, and tight rock rhythms.
Clean & Colored Boosts
A pure clean boost increases your volume with absolute transparency, preserving your guitar and amp's natural voice. Colored boosts (like treble boosters or preamp emulations) add subtle harmonic saturation and EQ shaping to help your tone cut through the mix. Industry-Standard Pedals in Our Collection
We are proud to stock some of the most highly regarded compressor and boost designs in the industry:
Strymon Compadre
The ultimate dual-channel utility. The Strymon Compadre combines a studio-grade analog compressor with a versatile boost channel. Featuring both vintage (squeezed) and studio (transparent) compression modes, alongside clean, flat, and treble-boost options, it is a complete front-end solution for your board.
Keeley Compressor Plus
The world's most popular OTA compressor. The Keeley Compressor Plus features a highly intuitive blend control (to mix in your dry signal for parallel compression) and a specialized single-coil/humbucker switch that automatically optimizes attack and release times for your pickups.
Wampler Ego
A modern classic. The Wampler Ego is celebrated for its exceptional transparency and comprehensive control set. With its highly responsive blend, tone, and sustain controls, it allows you to dial in the perfect balance of dynamic control and natural playing feel.

Frequently Asked Questions About Compressor & Boost Pedals
What does a guitar compressor pedal actually do? +
A compressor pedal manages the dynamic range of your guitar signal. It automatically attenuates (quiets down) the loudest peaks when you strike the strings hard, and boosts the quietest signals as your notes decay. This results in a highly consistent volume level, improved note definition, and increased sustain without adding unwanted distortion or overdrive.
Should I place my compressor before or after my boost pedal? +
In most standard signal chains, the compressor is placed first, directly after your guitar. This allows the compressor to level out your raw dynamics before the signal hits other pedals. Placing a clean boost after the compressor allows you to increase your overall volume for solos. However, placing a boost *before* a compressor will drive the compressor harder, resulting in more sustain and squish rather than a volume jump.
What is the benefit of a "Blend" control on a compressor? +
A Blend control (found on pedals like the Keeley Compressor Plus and Wampler Ego) allows you to perform parallel compression. This mixes your raw, uncompressed guitar signal back in with the compressed signal. It gives you the best of both worlds: the natural, sharp attack of your initial pick strike combined with the smooth, singing sustain of the compressed signal.
Do you inspect and test pre-owned pedals? +
Yes, absolutely! Every single pre-owned and used pedal that comes through our shop undergoes a rigorous multi-point technical inspection and play-test by our in-house technicians. We clean all jacks, test the potentiometers for crackle, and ensure the switching is 100% reliable. We back all used gear with our full 12-month warranty.
The Power of Compression & Boost: The Secret to Professional Guitar Tone
What separates a good guitar tone from a great one? While overdrive, delay, and modulation pedals get most of the attention, professional studio engineers and touring guitarists know that the secret to a polished, record-ready sound lies in the subtle art of dynamic control and clean gain staging.
A premium compressor boost pedal serves two critical functions on your pedalboard:
- Dynamic Smoothing: The compressor circuit evens out your playing dynamics by softening harsh transients and bringing up quiet notes, delivering a smooth, balanced, and highly articulate response with incredible sustain.
- Clean Gain Staging: The clean boost circuit provides a transparent volume increase that drives the front end of your tube amplifier into natural, creamy harmonic saturation, allowing your solos to cut through any live or studio mix with absolute clarity.
Choosing Your Utility Pedal: Optical, VCA, or Dual-Function
- Optical Compressors: Famous for their smooth, musical, and organic response. Optical compressors (such as the Diamond Compressor or Ampeg Opto Comp) utilize a light-dependent photocell to control gain reduction, delivering a soft-knee compression that is perfect for clean picking, funk, and acoustic guitars.
- VCA & OTA Compressors: The industry standards for fast, punchy, and aggressive dynamic control. OTA-style compressors (including the legendary Keeley Compressor Plus and Wampler Ego) offer incredible control over attack, release, and blend, making them the ultimate tools for country chicken-pickin', rock rhythm, and endless sustain.
- Dual Compressor & Boost Pedals: The ultimate space-saving pedalboard utilities. Dual-function pedals (such as the Strymon Compadre) combine a studio-grade compressor circuit with an independent, multi-voiced clean boost (clean, treble, or dirty) in a single enclosure, offering complete front-end control over your tone.

5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Where should I place a compressor boost pedal in my signal chain?
As a general rule, compressor and boost pedals should be placed at the very beginning of your signal chain, directly after your guitar. This ensures the compressor receives a clean, unmodulated signal to track your dynamics accurately, while the boost can drive your overdrive pedals and amplifier cleanly.
What is a "blend" control on a compressor pedal?
A blend control (often called parallel compression) allows you to mix your dry, uncompressed guitar signal with the compressed signal. This lets you preserve the natural, punchy attack of your initial pick strike while still enjoying the smooth sustain and balanced dynamics of the compressed signal.
Does my pedal come tested?
Yes. Every effects pedal purchased from MusicStreet receives a professional, custom inspection and safety check in our in-house workshop before dispatch to ensure it runs quietly and performs flawlessly.
Can I try these pedals in person?
Absolutely. We welcome you to visit our independent showroom at 10 Chequers Court, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. You can bring your own guitar and pedalboard, plug into our test amplifiers, and get honest, expert advice from our team of working musicians.
