The Science of Drum Sound: Coated vs. Clear & Single vs. Double-Ply
Choosing the right replacement drum heads is a critical step in defining your kit's sonic signature. The thickness, number of plies, and surface treatment of a drum head directly dictate its attack, sustain, warmth, and durability. Understanding these variables is essential for mastering your drum tuning and achieving your desired tone.
The first major choice is between coated drum heads and clear drum heads. Coated heads feature a thin, textured spray coating that dampens high-frequency overtones, delivering a warmer, rounder, and more focused sound with a subtle decay. They are also essential for jazz players who use brushes. Clear heads, by contrast, are completely transparent and offer a brighter, wetter, and more aggressive attack with maximum sustain and projection.
The second choice is ply configuration. Single-ply heads (typically 10-mil thick) are highly resonant, sensitive, and expressive, making them the gold standard for jazz, acoustic styles, and resonant-side heads. Double-ply heads (typically two layers of 7-mil film) are significantly more durable, offering a deeper, punchier low-end, a more controlled sustain, and a focused attack that is perfect for rock, metal, and heavy hitters.

These pre-configured packages include matching tom heads (typically 10", 12", and 14" or 12", 13", and 16") from the same series, ensuring a perfectly balanced, cohesive tone across your entire kit while saving you money compared to buying each head separately.

Frequently Asked Questions About Replacement Drum Heads
What is the difference between coated and clear drum heads?
+
Coated drum heads feature a textured white or black coating that dampens high-frequency overtones, delivering a warmer, more focused tone with a shorter decay. They are also essential for brush playing. Clear drum heads are transparent and offer a brighter, wetter, and more aggressive attack with maximum sustain, brightness, and projection.
Should I choose single-ply or double-ply drum heads?
+
Single-ply heads (like the Remo Ambassador) are highly resonant, sensitive, and bright, making them ideal for jazz, light acoustic playing, and resonant-side heads. Double-ply heads (like the Evans G2) utilize two layers of film, making them much more durable with a deeper, punchier sound and a more controlled sustain—perfect for rock, metal, and heavy hitters.
How often should I replace my drum heads?
+
This depends on how often and how hard you play. Active gigging or recording drummers may replace their batter heads every 1 to 3 months to maintain a crisp, punchy sound. Casual players should aim to replace them every 6 to 12 months. If you notice deep dents, a loss of coating, or if the drum sounds dull, dead, and is difficult to tune, it is time for a fresh set of replacement drum heads.
What are resonant heads and do they need to be replaced?
+
Resonant heads are the drum heads on the bottom of the toms and snare (or front of the bass drum) that do not get struck. They are critical for controlling the drum's sustain, projection, and overall pitch. While they do not wear out from physical impact, they do stretch and lose their resonance over time due to constant tension. We recommend replacing your resonant heads every third time you replace your batter heads.
The Drum Head Guide: Finding Your Perfect Voice
What separates a flat, dead-sounding drum kit from a rich, resonant, and articulate instrument? While the wood and construction of your drum shells define your kit's fundamental pitch, professional studio engineers and touring drummers know that the secret to shaping your attack, sustain, and overtones lies in choosing the right replacement drum heads.
Replacing your worn-out heads serves several critical functions:
-
Restored Articulation: Fresh heads respond accurately to your stick dynamics, delivering a crisp, clear attack that doesn't get lost in a live or studio mix.
-
Controlled Overtones: Choosing the correct ply thickness and coating helps control unwanted ring and high-frequency buzz, delivering a focused, musical decay.
-
Consistent Tuning: Worn, stretched, or dented heads lose their elasticity, making them incredibly difficult to tune and keep in pitch.
Understanding Drum Head Construction: Coated vs. Clear & Single vs. Double Ply
To choose the correct heads for your kit, you must understand the primary construction styles:
-
Coated Drum Heads: Coated heads feature a thin, textured spray-on coating (usually white or translucent). This coating dampens high-frequency overtones and delivers a warmer, rounder, and more vintage-voiced tone with a slightly softer attack. Coated heads are the industry standard for snare drums and are essential for brush playing.
-
Clear Drum Heads: Clear heads are completely transparent and deliver a bright, open, and aggressive sound with a sharp, punchy attack and maximum sustain. They are highly popular for tom-toms and bass drums in rock, pop, and metal.
-
Single-Ply Heads: Constructed from a single sheet of Mylar (typically 10-mil thick, like the classic Remo Ambassador). Single-ply heads are highly resonant, sensitive, and bright, making them perfect for jazz, light rock, and resonant-side heads.
-
Double-Ply Heads: Constructed from two sheets of Mylar (typically two 7-mil plies, like the Evans G2). Double-ply heads are highly durable, deliver a deeper, more focused tone with a punchy attack, and offer excellent control over ring—making them the ultimate choice for heavy-hitting rock and metal drummers.

5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How often should I change my drum heads?
As a general rule, active gigging and recording drummers should change their batter (striking) heads every 3 to 6 months, or as soon as they lose their elasticity, sustain, and become difficult to tune. Resonant (bottom) heads should be changed once a year to keep your kit sounding open and resonant.
What is the difference between a batter head and a resonant head?
The batter head is the top head that you physically strike with your sticks, designed for durability, attack, and tone shaping. The resonant head is the bottom head that reacts to the air movement inside the shell, designed specifically to control the drum's sustain and resonance. Never strike a resonant-specific head.
Do you stock these items in your showroom?
Yes. Every drum head listed on our site is physically in stock at our independent showroom at 10 Chequers Court, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. You can drop in, check out the selection, and get honest, expert advice from our team of working musicians.
Can I buy these as drum head packs?
Yes, absolutely! We stock pre-configured drum head packs (typically featuring 10", 12", and 16" tom heads) from Remo and Evans, which offer a highly convenient and cost-effective way to refresh your entire kit at once.
