What is the difference between a high-end production guitar and a Custom Shop model?

High-end production guitars (such as PRS Core Custom 24 or Gibson USA Standard) utilize advanced CNC precision combined with hand-finishing in standard production runs. Custom Shop models feature lower batch volumes, hand-selected tonewoods, custom hand-wound pickups, period-accurate construction, and master luthier voicing.

Why should I avoid drop-shipped high-end electric guitars?

Drop-shipped guitars are dispatched directly from logistics warehouses without unboxing or inspection. Without a bench inspection and 5-point setup by an in-house guitar technician, you risk receiving an unplayable instrument affected by climate shifts during storage and transit.

What does MusicStreet's 5-point setup include?

Every instrument sold through MusicStreet undergoes a comprehensive 5-point bench inspection: truss rod and neck relief calibration, nut slot depth check, bridge radius and intonation alignment, pickup height and electronic circuit testing, and fretboard conditioning.

Can I try boutique and custom shop guitars in person at MusicStreet?

Yes. MusicStreet operates a showroom at 10 Chequers Court, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, where players can test premium PRS, Fender, and Gibson models through high-end amplifiers in a dedicated testing environment.

Gibson SG Guitars

Unmatched upper-fret access, blistering midrange bite, and iconic lightweight mahogany contours make the Gibson SG one of the most celebrated solid-body electric guitars in music history. First introduced in 1961 as the "Solid Guitar," the SG became the weapon of choice for rock, blues, and metal legends from Angus Young and Tony Iommi to Derek Trucks.

Handcrafted in Nashville, Tennessee, our showroom collection spans the entire Gibson USA lineup—including the flagship SG Standard with batwing pickguard, the historically accurate SG ’61 Standard with Burstbucker pickups, dual soapbar SG Specials, and Gibson Custom Shop Reissues.

Every Gibson SG sold at Music Street undergoes a comprehensive workshop inspection and setup by our guitar technicians—adjusting truss rod relief, setting low buzz-free action, and intonating saddles before dispatch. Enjoy free UK courier delivery on orders over £99, flexible 0% finance, and competitive trade-in valuations.

Gibson SG Buyer’s Guide: Standard vs. ’61 Reissue vs. Special

Introduced in 1961 as the "Solid Guitar," the Gibson SG remains famous for its ultra-lightweight solid mahogany body, radical double-cutaway horns, and completely unrestricted access to the 22nd fret. Handcrafted in Nashville, Tennessee, the SG delivers an aggressive, biting midrange and fast neck playability favored across classic rock, hard rock, blues, and metal.

1. SG Standard vs. SG ’61 Reissue

SG Standard: Features the iconic late-’60s full-face "batwing" pickguard, a rounded mahogany neck profile, and modern-voiced 490R & 490T Alnico II humbuckers delivering punchy upper-midrange drive.
SG ’61 Standard: Period-correct early-’60s small 5-ply pickguard, SlimTaper neck profile, historically accurate deep body beveling, and 60s Burstbucker pickups with open, airy vintage PAF bite.

2. SG Special & SG Junior (P-90 Power)

SG Special: Dual soapbar P-90 pickups, compensated wraparound bridge, and hand-wired control assembly with Orange Drop capacitors for dynamic touch-sensitive grit.
SG Junior: The purest rock machine—single dogear P-90 in the bridge, single volume and tone controls, and maximum string-to-body resonance.

3. Solid Mahogany Tonewood & Balance

Slim Flat-Top Mahogany Body: Noticeably lighter than a Les Paul (typically 6.5–7.5 lbs), minimizing shoulder fatigue during long live sets.
Unrivaled Upper-Fret Access: Neck joint attaches at the 22nd fret rather than the 16th, providing completely unobstructed lead soloing across the high registers.

The Music Street Gibson Setup Promise

Because the SG has a deep neck join and lightweight body, precision setup is crucial. Before dispatch, our technicians perform:

Truss rod adjusted for exact neck relief under standard string tension
Nut slot depths filed for effortless open-chord and first-fret fretting
Tune-O-Matic saddle radius matched and intonated across all 6 strings
Rosewood fretboard hydrated with conditioner and frets polished
Switchcraft 3-way toggle switch and potentiometers continuity-tested

Frequently Asked Questions: Gibson SG Guitars

What is the difference between the Gibson SG Standard and SG ’61 Reissue? +

The main differences are the pickguard styling, pickups, and neck carve. The standard SG has a larger "batwing" pickguard, a rounded neck profile, and 490R/490T pickups. The SG ’61 Reissue features a vintage small teardrop pickguard, a faster SlimTaper neck profile, deeper body sculpting, and ’60s Burstbucker PAF pickups.

Is a Gibson SG lighter than a Gibson Les Paul? +

Yes, significantly. A typical Gibson SG weighs between 6.5 lbs and 7.5 lbs (approx. 2.9 to 3.4 kg), whereas a solid-body Gibson Les Paul typically weighs between 8.5 lbs and 10+ lbs. This makes the SG exceptionally comfortable for standing stage performances.

Does a Gibson SG include a hard case? +

Yes. All brand new Gibson USA SG Standard, ’61 Reissue, Special, and Custom Shop models include an authentic Gibson USA hardshell case (or heavy-duty Gibson soft case on select Tribute/Faded editions) along with the factory inspection checklist.

Do you set up Gibson SG guitars before delivery? +

Yes. Every single Gibson SG purchased from Music Street is unboxed, thoroughly inspected, tuned, and professionally set up in our Huntingdon workshop before dispatch to guarantee optimal action and buzz-free intonation straight from the case.

Can I part-exchange my current guitar for a Gibson SG? +

Absolutely. We offer competitive part-exchange valuations against new and pre-owned Gibson inventory. Send photos and instrument details to [email protected] or visit our Huntingdon showroom for an on-the-spot appraisal.
