Gretsch Buyer’s Guide: Series Hierarchy, Pickups & Body Architecture
From entry-level performance to Japanese master lutherie, Gretsch categorizes its instruments across three distinct production tiers and three core body architectures:
1. Series Hierarchy: Streamliner vs. Electromatic vs. Professional
-
Streamliner Series: Accessible, modern performance. Built with Broad'Tron high-output humbuckers designed to handle overdrive and distortion with feedback control.
-
Electromatic Series: The quintessential gigging musicians' staple. Features authentic Black Top Filter'Tron pickups, classic thumbnail fingerboard inlays, bound F-holes, and genuine Bigsby-licensed vibratos.
-
Professional / Players Edition (MIJ): Handcrafted in Japan to vintage perfection. Upgraded with ML bracing, locking tuners, string-thru Bigsby tailpieces, and premium TV Jones or FT-67 pickups.
2. Body Styles: Hollow Body vs. Center Block vs. Chambered Jet
-
Hollow Body (G6120, Country Gentleman, Falcon): Full 2.5" to 2.75" acoustic depth delivering rich acoustic resonance, percussive dynamic "snap", and lush overtones for clean to edge-of-breakup styles.
-
Center Block (G5622T, G5655T): Solid spruce center block running the length of the body, eliminating high-gain acoustic feedback while preserving hollowbody warmth and sustain.
-
Chambered Jet Solidbody (Duo Jet, Jet Club): Heavily routed mahogany bodies topped with maple, providing rich acoustic resonance with solidbody attack and effortless shoulder comfort.
3. Filter'Tron Pickups & Bigsby Vibrato Setup
-
Filter'Tron Tone: Dual-coil hum-cancelling pickups that retain the sparkling treble highs of single-coils with the warm low-mid thump of a humbucker.
-
Broad'Tron Pickups: Voiced for heavier rock and modern amps with thicker mid-range and higher output.
-
Bigsby Vibrato System: Smooth, expressive pitch shimmer. Paired with properly slotted nuts and roller bridges for exceptional return-to-pitch tuning stability.
