The Ampeg Legacy: SVT, Portaflex, and Modern Innovation
What sets ampeg bass amplifiers apart in the history of music is their uncompromising commitment to low-end power and character. Founded in the late 1940s, Ampeg revolutionized bass amplification with the introduction of the Portaflex "flip-top" combo, which became the gold standard for session players in the 1960s.
In 1969, Ampeg introduced the legendary Ampeg SVT (Super Valve Technology) head. Delivering a mind-blowing 300 watts of all-tube power, the SVT became the undisputed king of rock stage rigs, favored by bands like The Rolling Stones for its massive headroom and aggressive, harmonically rich overdrive. Today, Ampeg continues to innovate, packing that iconic analog warmth and grit into highly portable, modern formats.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ampeg Amplifiers
What is the Ampeg Rocket Bass series? +
The Ampeg Rocket Bass series is a modern lineup of lightweight combo amplifiers ranging from 30 to 500 watts. They combine classic 1960s aesthetics with modern Class-D power, featuring Ampeg's signature Legacy preamp and a foot-switchable Super Grit Technology (SGT) overdrive circuit for authentic, gritty Ampeg tones.
What is the difference between the Ampeg SVT and Portaflex designs? +
The Ampeg SVT is a legendary, high-powered all-tube stage rig (traditionally 300W) designed for massive rock stages, offering aggressive mid-range growl and immense volume. The Portaflex series (originally the B-15 "flip-top") is famous for its warm, round, and highly articulate studio-friendly tone, featuring a design where the amplifier head can be flipped upside down and stored inside the speaker cabinet for transport.
Can I use the Ampeg SGT-DI directly into a PA system? +
Yes, absolutely! The Ampeg SGT-DI is designed specifically to act as a complete direct-injection (DI) solution. With its built-in studio-quality cabinet IRs (Impulse Responses), balanced XLR output, and comprehensive EQ controls, you can send a fully produced, mic'd-cabinet Ampeg tone directly to the front-of-house PA system or your recording interface without needing a physical amplifier on stage.
Do you inspect and test used Ampeg amplifiers? +
Yes, absolutely! Every single pre-owned and used ampeg bass amp undergoes a rigorous multi-point technical inspection, safety check, and play-test by our in-house technicians before being listed for sale. We ensure that all pots, inputs, and speakers are performing optimally. We back all used gear with our full 12-month warranty.
The Ampeg Legacy: The Undisputed Sound of Bass
What makes Ampeg the most recorded and toured bass amplification brand in music history? Since the late 1940s, Ampeg has been dedicated to a singular goal: providing bass players with the power, headroom, and tonal authority required to anchor the band.
From the introduction of the Portaflex "flip-top" in the 1960s to the earth-shaking debut of the 300-watt all-tube SVT stack, Ampeg has defined the sound of the electric bass. Whether you are looking for a warm, vintage-voiced practice combo or a high-power bass head ampeg rig for touring, Ampeg's signature midrange growl and deep, controlled low-end ensure your bass is heard with absolute authority.
Choosing Your Ampeg Rig: Combos, Heads, and Preamps
- The Rocket Bass (RB) Combo Series: The ultimate modern practice and gigging combos. Featuring Ampeg's legacy preamp voicing, highly musical 3-band EQs, and the proprietary SGT (Super Grit Technology) overdrive circuit, Rocket Bass combos deliver classic Ampeg growl in ultra-lightweight, vintage-styled enclosures.
- The Classic SVT & Portaflex Series: The undisputed standards for high-power stage performance. From the all-tube warmth of the SVT-CL to the highly portable, solid-state versatility of the Portaflex series, these heads and cabinets project massive low-end authority.
- The Micro VR Series: The ultimate "mini-stack." The ampeg micro vr delivers 200 watts of pure Ampeg tone in a highly compact, head-and-cab configuration that looks like a shrunken SVT stack, making it the perfect choice for home studios and small-to-medium gigs.
- The SGT-DI Preamp & DI Pedal: For players who want Ampeg tone without the heavy lifting. The ampeg sgt di pedal packs a complete studio-grade preamp, a sweepable midrange EQ, the SGT overdrive circuit, and an advanced IR-based cabinet simulator into a highly portable pedalboard enclosure.

5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is Ampeg's SGT (Super Grit Technology)?
SGT is Ampeg's proprietary analog overdrive circuit. It is designed to replicate the warm, organic harmonic saturation and soft-clipping characteristics of a classic Ampeg SVT tube amplifier pushed to its limit, allowing you to dial in everything from subtle warmth to aggressive, grinding distortion.
Is the Ampeg Micro VR loud enough for gigs?
Yes, absolutely! The ampeg micro vr head delivers 200 watts of continuous power at 4 ohms. When paired with the matching SVT-210AV cabinet, it provides more than enough volume and low-end projection for rehearsals, studio recording, and small-to-medium club gigs.
Does my Ampeg amplifier come tested?
Yes. Every amplifier purchased from MusicStreet receives a professional, custom inspection and safety check in our in-house workshop before dispatch to ensure it runs quietly and performs flawlessly.
Can I try these amplifiers in person?
Absolutely. We welcome you to visit our independent showroom at 10 Chequers Court, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. You can bring your own bass, plug into our test amplifiers, and get honest, expert advice from our team of working musicians.
