It's often said that after spending enough time together, a guitar eventually becomes an extension of the guitar player's arm. While this concept can sound ludicrous, it is true for many artists who have made a living from their music.

Over time, hours upon hours of playing eventually alter the shape and texture of the wood; its grooves now bespoke to the musician's hands. This is why every guitar player, even those who have owned several instruments over the years, will be partial to one specific guitar, even after owning several more.

Some instruments are just worth keeping forever. One such instrument is Lowden Guitars, handcrafted in Northern Ireland and known for their superior tone, craftsmanship, and playability. Each guitar is made with the same attention to detail and care, making them an actual work of art.

History of Lowden Guitars

Lowden Guitars was founded in 1976 by luthier George Lowden. Lowden began his career as an apprentice in the repair shop of a local guitar maker, where he quickly developed a passion for the craft. After completing his apprenticeship, Lowden opened his workshop in 1975 and began crafting custom guitars for local musicians.

Lowden's guitars quickly gained a reputation for their incredible tone and playability, achieved through high-quality tonewoods and meticulous attention to detail. Lowden also pioneered a unique bracing design, still used in all his guitars.

In 1981, Lowden released his first production model, the F-35, which was an instant success. Since then, Lowden has continued to expand its range of production models, and its guitars are now used by some of the world's most renowned musicians. Lowden is still owned and operated by George Lowden and his family, and each guitar is still handcrafted in Northern Ireland. Here are three of the most famous musicians that play Lowden guitars.

1. Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton is one of the most prolific guitarists of all time and has been playing Lowden guitars since the early 2000s. He is known for playing a Lowden F-35 model, customised with a Fishman pickup.

2. Ed Sheeran

British musician Ed Sheeran has had a long and fruitful relationship with Lowden Guitars. While making his 'X' album, Sheeran used a Lowden guitar given to him by Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody.

Seeing how much Sheeran loved the instrument, Lightbody asked George Lowden of Lowden guitars to make a unique guitar that he could gift to Sheeran. George crafted a miniature guitar named the Wee Lowden, or the WL.

Eventually, Lightbody would introduce Sheeran to George Lowden, which sparked the conversation about making a line of Lowden acoustic guitars designed by the British singer. This collaboration produced the WL Series, a whole line of acoustic guitars designed by the British singer.

3. Mark Knopfler

Mark Knopfler is one of the most iconic and instantly recognisable guitarists of all time. He has significantly influenced rock, blues, and folk music for decades. His work with Dire Straits is some of the most iconic of all time, and his solo performances and albums have further solidified his place as a guitar legend.

Knopfler is known for his unique style of playing and sound. One of the ways he achieves his signature blues-rock sound is by using his Lowden S-25 guitar, an instrument known for its bright, articulate sound. Knopfler is also known for using open tunings and fingerpicking techniques, which give his music a signature sound.

Conclusion

Lowden Guitars is one of the most iconic instruments in recent history. From Eric Clapton to Taylor Swift, Lowden guitars have helped many notable musicians make wonderful music enjoyed today. You can't go wrong with Lowden guitars if you're looking for a handcrafted acoustic guitar capable of articulating crispy notes that punches through a mix.
