A Precision Bass features a single split-coil pickup delivering deep, punchy, low-mid thump that anchors a mix. A Jazz Bass uses two single-coil pickups with independent volume controls, providing brighter harmonic growl, crisp articulation, and a narrower, faster neck profile.

A 4-string bass is the recommended starting point for most beginners due to its narrower neck, simpler string-muting technique, and standard E-A-D-G tuning. A 5-string bass adds a low B string, which is ideal for modern rock, metal, gospel, and pop requiring extended sub-low frequencies.

Short-scale basses (30-inch scale vs standard 34-inch) feature closer fret spacing and lower string tension, making them easier to play for musicians with smaller hands, guitarists transitioning to bass, or players seeking a warm, thumpy, vintage 1960s tone.

Passive bass pickups require no battery and produce a dynamic, organic, warm vintage tone. Active bass pickups include an onboard battery-powered preamp (usually 9V or 18V) with active EQ boost/cut controls, higher output, and ultra-quiet operation under stage lighting.
